Getting started

Every way into HCode: from the HostAfrica client panel, with your email and HCode password, and through a team invite.

Open HCode from your service in the HostAfrica client panel, or sign in at /auth/signin with your email and HCode password. There is no public sign-up and no GitHub sign-in.

Who has an HCode account

An account is created when:

  • you order HCode in the HostAfrica client panel. HCode creates an organisation for the service and an account for the email address on your client panel account, with you as the organisation's owner. If an HCode account with that email already exists, the new organisation is added to it.
  • a team invites you. You create your account from the invite link, for the address the invite was sent to. See Invite your team.

GitHub can be connected to an existing account to deploy repositories, but it can't be used to sign in or to create an account.

Open HCode from the HostAfrica client panel

Opening your HCode service from the client panel (Open HCode, or Manage on the service) signs you straight into that service's organisation, with no password. The link the client panel sends you with is valid for 60 seconds and works once, so open it right away rather than bookmarking it.

  • Only the organisation's owner can sign in this way. Admins, members and viewers sign in with their own email and password.
  • The session is limited to that one organisation, and the organisation switcher only shows that one.
  • In this session you can work on projects, manage the team and set or change your HCode password. Changing your name, two-factor authentication, your list of other sessions, API keys and integrations need a direct sign-in.

If the link fails, you land on the sign-in page with a message that says why:

Message What to do
"Your sign-in link has expired. Go back to your HostAfrica client panel and open HCode again." The link was more than 60 seconds old or had already been used. Open the service from the client panel again for a fresh one.
"Your HostAfrica account doesn't match the owner of this HCode organisation. Please contact support." The client panel account you came from is not the organisation's owner in HCode. Email [email protected].
"This organisation is not active right now. Check the service in your HostAfrica client panel, or contact support." The service is suspended or closed. See Suspended organisations.
"You have more than one HCode service. Go back to your HostAfrica client panel and open HCode from the service you want." The client panel did not say which of your services to open. Open HCode from the service itself.
"Signing in from your HostAfrica client panel did not work. Please try again from the client panel, or sign in below." Open the service from the client panel again, or sign in with your email and password.

Set a password for direct sign-in

Until you set an HCode password, the dashboard shows "Set a password to sign in directly to HCode." Click Set your password and choose one of 8 to 128 characters. You can then sign in at /auth/signin with your client panel email and that password. See Password and sign-in.

Sign in with email and password

  1. Go to https://hcode.hostafrica.com/auth/signin.
  2. Enter your Email and Password.
  3. Click sign in.

If you forgot your password, use the "forgot password?" link under the form. See Reset a forgotten password.

If HCode says your email address isn't verified, click resend verification email in the same message and follow the link in your inbox. The link is valid for 24 hours.

The two-factor step

If you turned on two-factor authentication, HCode asks for the 6-digit code from your authenticator app after your password. Under "other options:" you can get a code by email or use a backup code instead; Sign in with two-factor has the details.

Choose an organisation

If you belong to one organisation, HCode opens it. If you belong to several, the Choose organisation page lists them with your role in each, and marks the one you used last as "Last used". Pick one to continue. If you signed in from an invite link, HCode adds you to that organisation and opens it.

An account that isn't in any organisation gets a page titled "You're not in an organisation yet". Ask an owner or admin of the organisation to invite you, then open the link in their email. You can switch later from the organisation name at the top of the sidebar; see Organisations.

An organisation with no projects yet shows a Create your first project button. Deploy your first app walks through it.

A suspended or closed organisation opens on a status page instead of the dashboard. See Suspended organisations.

Zanode customers

Zanode accounts have not been moved to HCode, so a Zanode email and password don't work here. A wrong email or password shows "If you're a Zanode customer, your account is still on Zanode." Choosing it, or the Zanode customers link under the sign-in form, explains the move:

  • keep signing in to Zanode at app.zanode.co.za;
  • Zanode will email every customer about the move;
  • to move now, email [email protected].
